Why does asus laptop keep asking for huge amounts of updates?

For the last couple of weeks, every time I shut down my notebook it installs 21 updates. Vista OS

The same 21 updates?
I think you should run diskcheck and defrag before you install the next time. Might not be a bad idea to clear your cache and delete all your temp files, too.
Look into http://www.ccleaner.com/ to help you with deleting cache and temp files….
I don’t know if you know this but from April 13th this year windows 2000 and XP will no longer be supported by Microsoft and from June 13 Vista will no longer be supported
It may have to do with your method of shutdown.
When registry changes must be made, use the ‘restart’ button as indicated in the small window, and allow the system to take as long as necessary to process. Do not force a shutdown with the power switch.
And some updates require a few moments at the startup for various file or folder changes.
Verify your system update status @ Microsoft Updates:
Internet Explorer> Tools> Windows update> follow prompts as needed.
