How do I use dual monitors with a Macbook Pro, but use an external monitor and display?

I want to catnect my Macbook Pro to an external matitor and use dual matitors but use the external matitor as ate matitor and the Macbook display as the other… how would I do that, or does it do that automatically when you catnect it to an external matitor?

i went to the genus bar at my apple store when i bought the output adaptor. the guy configured it for me, if you can’t go to the apple store try online support http://www.apple.com or call 1-800-MY-APPL
It’s a pretty simple thing to do. You just need to plug in your monitor, and the display will by default appear as a second desktop with nothing on it. You can adjust things like resolution, location and more in the displays section in System Preferences
