How do I safely sell Macbook with all applications installed without risking identity theft?

February 28, 2010 · Posted in Questions & Answers

I want to sell my macbook with secatd-hand applicatiats installed at it. This, obviously, will allow me to sell it for more. However, I dat’t want to risk not cleaning my computer off before giving it to a stranger–– they could steal my identity or credit card info or something. Any tips?

Notes Install :
  • During the installation of this file, be sure that you are logged in as the Administrator or as a user with Administrative rights.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.

The smartest thing you can do is reformat/reload windows. There are things hidden on your machine that you will never find. You could clean it out and anybody with a little skill can find a lot of things you thought couldn’t be found. I will tell you this’ One of the biggest mistakes people make when selling a computer with vista or xp on it is forgetting to delete all restore points. They clean out there machine and think they have everything all cleaned off but forget to delete restore points. I’ve found many credit card numbers that way on computers at pawn shops.

Identity theft is over rated. I have been in the finance industry for over 15 years and have seen less than 5 cases of real identity theft. Identity theft is a marketing ploy to get you to buy products you will never need and spend an extra 5$ a month per credit card. In the 50’s it was bomb shelters, in the 80’s it was communists. I would have to say now the big scare is identity theft. Who is making money off of this, well lets think about it a credit card company with 2 million card holders and then you can scare them all into 5$ a month credit protection bogus programs, comes out to 10million a month extra money for them why not push the identity theft issue? Sure has worked great for that credit report guy who sings and plays guitar on tv for you
