HP is a better bet, ASUS is more of a risk for performance trade off.

With AMD 64 Bit 3000+ chips?

    They’re rock solid!

I would go for Toshiba or HP. But BEST thing is to first figure out what you will be using it for and find the cheapest one that fits your preferences. If you buying it for around $549.00 or so, don’t get extra warranty, which may cost up to $150.00. Laptops come with 1 Yr Warranty from Manufactures anyway. After 1 Yr you are on own but your laptop will have no problem for at least 2 YR. So after 2 yr if there is problem just get another cheap one, just think of it as you getting new computer instead purchasing warranty.

I have bought many laptops and my experience says, if you get good piece than it will last for 3-4 years without problem, no matter which brand it is. But best thing is to get what suits you.
